New Technology Allows Casino Slot Machines to be Reprogrammed in Seconds
/ 16. April 2006
Casino slot machines are big business, bringing in over $7 million a year in Nevada alone – double that of the income from table games in Nevada's casinos. However, despite recent growth in popularity, more and more casino slot machine fans are turning to online casino slot games.

In a bid to win back patrons of the casino slot machines, Treasure Island, a Las Vegas casino, is experimenting with new advances in casino slot technology that could change the face of the casino slot world forever.

The new technology will allow the casino to change over its slots in seconds from a central computer; a process that currently takes hours of manual work. Changing over a casino slot machine is a complicated task, which requires opening the machine up, replacing the chip inside and changing the machine's glass displays. This also involves ordering new parts, and a technician to do the job, and could cost the casino thousands of dollars and take a whole day.

Now all that is changing with the new trails being conducted at Treasure Island casino, all the casino's slots are connected to a central computer, which allows the casino executives to reprogram the casino slot machines' games, change the machines' denominations, payback percentages and even the themes of the casino slot machines, all at the click of a mouse. Work to change the casino slot machines can now be done by one employee in the central office in a matter of seconds using the new technology.

The new advances are undergoing testing under the watch of Nevada gambling regulators, and if the technology receives regulatory approval, it will allow casino operators to reprogram the casino slot machines to cater for different crowds at different times of day.

Executives at Treasure Island are assuring gambling regulators that the technology will not be used to change the odds erratically, but to tailor the machines to suit the changing demography of the consumers. This will mean testing customer confidence as well.

The development of network-connected casino slot machines highlights the growing relationship between gambling and technology. Casino slot machines are becoming more and more computerised, with only half of the machines on the floor today using actual spinning cylinders, the rest being totally digital machines that feature numerous animated reels and the offer of bonus rounds.
